What We Accept
Velvet Quill accepts romance submissions in the following sub-genres: dark romance, mafia romance, billionaire romance, and paranormal romance.
We welcome submissions from authors of every background, and especially welcome books by and about BIPOC and other underrepresented voices.
We do not accept short stories or fiction that does not fit the romance genre. We do not publish erotica or Christian romance. We prefer high heat / open door romance, but will consider other heat levels depending on the quality of the submission.
Completed manuscripts should be a minimum of 25,000 words and no more than 120,000 words.
We accept AI-assisted, but not AI-written, fiction.*
We provide developmental editing, cover design, and publishing. Authors are responsible for copy editing and proofreading. Authors run the marketing of their own books and are expected to maintain an active social media presence; we provide marketing strategy guidance and coordinate press-level efforts such as anthologies, promotions, sales, and cross-promotion between our authors.
We work with authors who are serious about writing as a profession and committed to building a sustainable career.
Velvet Quill is a traditional press operating on a royalty-share model — no upfront fees to the author. Publishing strategy (KDP, wide, or a mix) is set in collaboration with the author. We do not work with agents; please submit directly. Full terms are set out in the contract.

*AI-assisted refers to text that has been reviewed by AI, or where elements such as plot, character, pacing, and style have been developed with AI support, but where the text itself is authored by a human being. Heavy AI editing or rewording may meet the definition of AI-written rather than AI-assisted.
